Nice to see all of these points in one post. Of course I knew most of the facts, but I hadn't cottoned onto his ancestor being William Marshal (despite my family tree lol!). Interesting to see your breakdown of charter witnessing too - that says quite a bit about Hugh's close presence to the king.<br /><br />It is also clear, when the facts are put forward rather than the salacious fictions put forward as fact, that Hugh wasn't quite as evil or ruthless as he is sometimes made out to be.
