As you say, the calendared rolls mostly feature the upper classes, though I have seen more 'common' people there too, and will post more about them as soon as possible. I love seeing, for example, that people had troubles with their neighbours 700 years ago too. ;) In case you missed them, I wrote two posts about 'Proofs of Age' a while back which featured lovely details of common people and how they remembered dates, and a couple on 'Law and Order' which also had some fascinating details.Kathryn Warnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397714441908100576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19545049.post-1139980421728401932012-04-16T14:29:29.960+01:002012-04-16T14:29:29.960+01:00"Hokeday" is otherwise known as Hocktide..."Hokeday" is otherwise known as Hocktide, and is the 2nd Tuesday after Easter.

Love these little glimpses into everyday life. There are some Fine Rolls of Henry III online, also, which make interesting reading. But they are mostly concerning the upper classes, with upper class problems concerning things like transfer of property and suchlike, and fines figured in pounds and marks. This shows more how the "little people" live.

Although I did notice that Ralph de Monthermer (or his clerk, anyway) made an appearance in the one item!Tiggywinklenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19545049.post-62901618084566981212012-04-11T15:03:03.826+01:002012-04-11T15:03:03.826+01:00I agree, Carla! :)I agree, Carla! :)Kathryn Warnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397714441908100576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19545049.post-81721170661094612862012-04-11T14:55:23.134+01:002012-04-11T14:55:23.134+01:00These are terrific - every one could be the starti...These are terrific - every one could be the starting point for a story :-)Carlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11901028520813891575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19545049.post-39810242956423571242012-03-30T10:17:19.491+01:002012-03-30T10:17:19.491+01:00My favourites are the lute and the escaped swans. ...My favourites are the lute and the escaped swans. :-)Kathryn Warnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397714441908100576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19545049.post-2832665521441148042012-03-29T20:28:32.579+01:002012-03-29T20:28:32.579+01:00I love these little anecdotes.
