I got back from holiday yesterday. We had a great time in Yorkshire, and surprisingly, the weather was pretty good - only one rainy morning during the entire week, and mostly sunny. From the third day on, though, it was unusually chilly for the time of year, only about 10 to 15 degrees (about 50 to 60 F). Just before we left, I got a bad infection in one of my root canals - oh, the pain!! Half my face swelled up - really
not pretty. Although I often fantasise about being able to time travel back to Edward II's era, I have to admit that for a couple of days I felt like falling to my knees in gratitude for being born in a world with antibiotics. And strong painkillers.
I have hundreds of photos, though, wouldn't you know it, I had a disaster with my digital camera and managed to delete loads of them. If you were anywhere in the vicinity of Old Byland last Wednesday, you probably heard my scream of rage and frustration. Oh well. Still have lots of pics to post here. To be going on with, here are pics of the four great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire, from top to bottom:
- Jervaulx, founded 1156
- Byland, founded 1134
- Fountains, founded 1132
- Rievaulx, founded 1132.
Hope you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back! (Lady D also has had dental woes--is something going around 14th-century blogland?) Looking forward to all of the pictures!
ReplyDeleteSo good to have you back! We've missed you. I can't believe I got a 'sympathy' abscess in a root canal as well!! Good job (although disappointing too) that I couldn't come up to see or else we'd have looked like a couple of bookends!! lol!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics though - really looking forward to seeing more and hearing about your trip :-)
Thanks, all! The infection is a lot better, though I have to go back to the dentist tomorrow. Can't believe you had a similar problem, Lady D - excruciating, isn't it? I'm crossing all my fingers that we don't spread it round 14th-century blogland!
ReplyDeleteAmazinng sights!! You might have enjoyed them in real during your vacation trip.
ReplyDeletePretty pics. Should add those places to my To See list. :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome back.
Thanks, Gabriele! I definitely recommend the North York Moors national park for your next trip - lots of abbey and castle ruins, and great countryside, too.
